Extraction 5/5: Rosin / SHO

BHO has long been the favored method of extraction artists and enthusiasts worldwide. However, since experimenting with straightening irons around 2015, more and more people are switching to the explosively popular Rosin technique. Completely unexplosive with the aid of temperature, time and pressure, the resin is pressed out of the flower material or hashish by means of a heat press, which can be bought from as little as CHF 220 in our country. That's right, you can also press hashish to further increase its active ingredient content. However, this is considered the supreme discipline of raisin pressing and should take place under comparatively low pressure.

Apropos pressure: This is indicated by means of the units PSI or bar. The maximum pressure of a press always depends on the size of the heat plates and the applied lever or the size of the hydraulic pump. While hashish is pressed at 300 PSI, flowers can be pressed at up to 1000 PSI. With exceeding pressure values too much flower material comes with in the concentrate, which one would like to prevent in favor of a high active substance concentration.

Our largest press can easily press with 1000 PSI on an area of 10x10cm - this is ensured by a hydraulic pump and a dead weight of almost 90kg to provide the necessary stability.

For pressing raisin, in addition to plant material, you also need a paper to separate the material from the heat plates. In the traditional sense, baking paper was often used for this purpose - but since this is suspected of contaminating the concentrate with toxic and carcinogenic substances above certain pressures or temperatures, we carry the healthy alternative for equally healthy concentrate.

To obtain a pure concentrate using the Rosin method, the starting material is packed into so-called Rosin Bags before pressing. These are small bags made of nylon fabric with a hole size of 25 to 200 microns. We recommend 25 microns for hash raisin and pollinate, and 73 microns for flowers. Since hashish in itself is already very fine-grained due to the small resin glands, it also needs a close-meshed boundary. Flowers, on the other hand, feel most comfortable between 60 and 90 microns, because with smaller hole sizes the much resin cannot flow off quickly enough and remains stuck in the nylon bag, while with large hole sizes too much plant material is extracted along with it.

A useful accessory for raisin pressing represents a so-called raisin pre-press mold. This is a mold, with the help of which the material to be pressed before the actual hitzepressen can already be brought into a homogeneous shape, in order to subsequently achieve optimal results under the heat plates. This is because the more homogeneous the mass of flowers and/or leaves is, the more raisin can escape to the outside. If the material is not evenly distributed, this can lead to so-called "cold spots", which leaves some of the resin in the material instead of being transported to the outside. Such a mold is available for small sizes and large projects.

In this five-part guide to extraction, we want to give you comprehensive information about plant extraction. We present the different types of extraction and show risks, advantages and disadvantages.
